One of Germany's most famous Christmas sweets, the anise-flavored springerle are beautiful embossed cookies that originated centuries ago in the German duchy of Swabia. The name Springerle [SPRING-uhr-lee] comes from an old German dialect and means "little knight." probably because of pictures of knights that were made on the cookies. Today they have different images on the cookies.
